Wicking Beds Permabee

You are invited to work in Margaret and Chris’s garden in Denistone on the July 27th PSN Permabee project . This Permabee is to help in preparation for the national Sustainable House Day. The garden will be open to the public in September. The main project for the day is the conversion of four metal raised garden beds into wicking beds. This is a great opportunity to learn how to build wicking beds suitable for growing annual vegetables in an urban garden.

We will be removing soil from three existing beds and put the fourth one in place, then line them with geotextile fabric and pond liner.

For the water reservoir  we will lay down ag pipes and overflow pipes then fill each bed with a 10-15 cm layer of gravel at the bottom of the bed. The last steps are to line the bed with more geotextile fabric and fill it up with the previously excavated soil.

If you are not ready to get close and personal with a wheelbarrow, then there are other jobs you can help with: weeding, mulching and general tidying-up of the garden so it can be planted with spring vegetables and look presentable for the Sustainable House Day.

There will be plant cuttings and perennial herbs for you to take home if you are interested.

Bring some morning tea and a mug. A hot lunch will be provided with hot and cold drinks on the day. As always safety first so bring your boots, hats, gloves, sun screen & any wheelbarrows you can spare!
