 PSN Monthly Meeting

Birds in Backyards

Come to the first PSN meeting in 2015 and celebrate the start of a new year full of permaculture opportunities. Meet old friends, make new ones, listen to an interesting talk, check out the library and recycled goods table and stay for supper.

Our guest speaker will be Holly Parsons, the manager of Birds in Backyards(http://birdsinbackyards.net/). Hers is going to be a fascinating talk for everyone who would like to integrate birds into their garden’s ecosystem or to know more about birds living around us.

Birds in Backyards is a research, education and conservation program from Bird Life Australia (http://www.birdlife.org.au/)about the birds that live where people live. The program was developed in response to the loss of small native birds from our parks and gardens, the rapid expansion of our urban landscape and the subsequent loss of habitat for native birds. BiB is not only focused on the birds though, they also want to foster a love of the environment and a connection with nature amongst the community.

Holly is the Program Manager and has been involved in Birds in Backyards on and off since it began back in 1999. She has always had an interest in birds and ecology which led her to the field of avian urban ecology at University. Holly has gone on to complete her PhD looking at the impact of urbanisation on Superb Fairy-wrens and, while she still loves doing ecological research, she has moved into the environmental education field by managing Birds in Backyards. This rather unique position allows her to have a foot in both camps - she still has involvement in scientific research through various Birds in Backyards projects as well as with the invaluable database of surveys Birds in Backyards members contribute, but she also gets to use birds as a way of communicating the importance of biodiversity to the broader community. It is a role that she is passionate about and she is keen to keep making Birds in Backyards bigger and better.
