What's On

Permaculture Sydney North creates empowered, resilient and sustainable communities by teaching people skills in permaculture and self sufficiency.  We run a range of practical, hand-on workshops and courses, and we bring in guest speakers on a range of topics close to our hearts. Our education is fun and a great way to connect with a like-minded community.  Many events are free for members, and our paid courses are affordably priced.

    August permabee

    Hi perma people.

Sorry for the late notice for the August permabee, hopefully I haven’t created any clash of plans for anyone.

    *Last month

Well the July permabee at Chris & Margaret’s was a busy one, shuffling soil and the raised garden beds in a fairly confined space, while others of us did the donkey work running a wheelbarrow relay hauling the gravel up from the drive to the wicking beds. The turnout was good, lunch was even better and the weather was more like a summers day.

All in all it was a successful day with two of the four beds completed and the third well under way. Special thanks to Jeremy Yau for putting in the extra tine to get that third one finished during the following week.

    *This month

This month we are heading to Jenny Robertshaw’s home this Sunday 24th to do a makeover on her compost bays, making them more user friendly so we will be dismantling the old ones and realigning them to catch any surface runoff and improve access.

On the other side of Jenny’s back garden there is a garden bed that alternates between drought and flood. We will be striping it back, transplanting some of the plants then mark out the contours so water can be distributed back through the central part of the garden. Due to shallow rock shelves the plan is to build up mounds on contour with loos stone and soil to capture organic matter, building up the soil and improving water retention and distribution.

One other job is to transplant some fruit trees to better locations in the garden.

It’s not a massive permabee but if we could get ten or twelve volunteers it should be a doddle.

    *Next month

In September on Sunday the 21st we are all off to Macquarie Uni to help Belinda Bean get a start on the mandala garden at Macquarie’s sustainability house. It will be a five bed, keyhole, no dig, crop rotation system with a movable dome for quail over one of the beds. With plenty of Uni students getting involved, its location and Belinda’s networking skills this should turn out to be a real asset in promoting permaculture into the future.

As always you will need to register on line to find out the address and let us know how many to feed.

Remember to dress for the weather and work.

Look forward to catching up then.

    Peter

P.S. If anyone has lost any tools or found any, pleas let me know so we can get them back where they belong. Thanks

Sustainable House Day is an initiative showcasing sustainable houses and/or gardens to the public. It is a great opportunity to visit properties and be inspired by the designs implemented in the quest for sustainability. What's more important, for permaculture practitioners SHD enables them to show permaculture designs to wider audiences by opening permaculture gardens.

If you are interested in opening your garden for 2014 Sustainable House Day (Sep 7 & 14), please go to the SMD website

Ronni Kahn – Founder & CEO of OzHarvest

Successful business entrepreneur, Ronni Kahn, founded OzHarvest in November 2004 to take action on the amount of food wasted by the hospitality industry.

OzHarvest rescues its food daily from restaurants, cafes, hotels, retailers and food outlets then delivers the fresh meals to charities.

Oz Harvest collected and delivered its first meal on 3 November 2004 and in its first month delivered 4,000 meals to 14 shelters using one van.

OzHarvest now delivers over 400,000 meals each month with a fleet of 21 vans to more than 500 charities across Sydney, Wollongong, Newcastle, Adelaide, Brisbane, Gold Coast and Melbourne. Since its inception, over 21 million meals have been delivered to women, children and men in need while also having rescued over 6,000 tonnes of food from ending up as landfill and waste.

Ronni was inspired by AmericaHarvest, a New York charity that had been operating successfully for over 20 years. The Macquarie Foundation provided initial funds and Goodman provided the first OzHarvest van and office space.

Ronni was instrumental in changing the existing legislation across four states that had prevented food donors from supplying excess food. Now companies and registered businesses around Australia are protected from liability when donating quality excess food to OzHarvest under the Civil Liabilities Amendment Act and Health Acts.

In 2011, OzHarvest found a way to assist and teach communities and individuals in rural Australia to set up their own food rescue service with the introduction of a regional food rescue program, REAP.

Ronni was also behind the creation of the NEST program – Nutrition, Education & Sustenance Training which aims to educate vulnerable Australians about nutrition and healthy eating, providing valuable life skills to disadvantaged and marginalised communities.

Ronni has been recognised as a leader in the fields of entrepreneurship, social impact and innovation and has been awarded numerous achievements for her work and commitment to the community, some of which include:

    • Australia’s Local Hero, Australian of the Year Awards 2010
    • Enriched List by American Express in 2010
    • Veuve Clicquot Award Business Woman Tribute Award for Innovation, Entrepreneurial Skill and Contribution to the Community in 2012.
    • Ernst & Young Social Entrepreneur of the Year 2012
    • InStyle Woman of Style Award - Community /Charity category 2011
    • Official Australian Partner of the UNEP Think.Eat.Save Campaign (United Nations Environment Program)
    • OzHarvest received the United Nations Environment Day Award for Community 2013

Monday 15th September at 7pm (supper at 8:30pm) at the Lindfield Community Centre, 259 Pacific Highway, Lindfield.
