What's On

Permaculture Sydney North creates empowered, resilient and sustainable communities by teaching people skills in permaculture and self sufficiency.  We run a range of practical, hand-on workshops and courses, and we bring in guest speakers on a range of topics close to our hearts. Our education is fun and a great way to connect with a like-minded community.  Many events are free for members, and our paid courses are affordably priced.

      PSN Open Garden -    Denistone

       Saturday Nov 1st, 2012 - 10am to 2pm

Another permaculture garden belonging to a PSN member will be open for members to visit, enjoy and benefit from the exchange of information and knowledge of other permies. The garden was placed 2nd in the City of Ryde annual Spring Garden Competition 2014 in the "Best Edible Gardens" category.

Located on a steep hill the Denistone property is an example of a six-years-old vibrant, sustainable permaculture garden, designed with the primary goal to provide the owners with food and medicinal plants.

Annual vegetables are grown in raised beds (some of them are self-watering wicking beds) and the produce is either eaten fresh or preserved in various ways for storage. Fruit trees and perennial vegetables are mixed with flowering plants attracting beneficial insects, creating a rich and colourful ecosystem, which includes also a small flock of five egg-laying hens.

Rainwater is harvested from the roof of the house and two other structures in the garden (total storage 15,000 litres) with main tanks feeding garden taps, laundry and the second toilet. Surface water runoff is captured using swales, mulch and a composting pit.

Nothing ever leaves the garden; all non-edible materials collected from it are composted (in bays, bins and worm farms), mulched or used to build plant supports.

Margaret will conduct a tour of her garden 15 minutes after each hour.

Please register using the Register button to the left of the screen; in case of problems email

The address will be emailed to you on registration. If you would like to bring along family or friends who are not members, a small $5 donation can be made to PSN on the day.

If you would like to stay and have a cup of tea and a chat after the tour, please bring along a mug. There will be also some perennial plants (yarrows, mints, elderberry, yucon) available for sale.

If you're not a member and would like to join our community and take part in this garden team day, please join here

    Super Adobe Dome Building Workshop

Come along for an amazing week of hands-on building and learn to build your own dome home from the ground up with Curvatecture. This is a skill anyone can pick up and Hayden is keen to spread the knowledge. This is an affordable, sustainable and achievable building technique that can be applied to a huge range of structures.

    Super Adobe Build

WHAT IS SUPER ADOBE? Superadobe is a term coined by Iranian architect Nadir Khalili. After a fruitful life as a commercial architect in the US he traded it all in for a chance to discover something simpler. He began experimenting with the earth below his feet on a property in the Californian High Desert. With the help of his architecture students and volunteers, he began to build odd structures amongst the Joshua trees…..Keep reading here: http://curvatecture.com/superadobe/

Traditionally, these buildings are created during Workshops, which are a meeting of wonderful people and energies all coming together to build something very special.

“Education is a huge driving force behind my love of this technology, and it is my life’s goal to spread this knowledge as far as possible.” Hayden Annable.

1960086_517033948399295_273170119750866449_nTHE WORKSHOP: Learn all you will need to know to confidently head out into the world and build your own dome. This will be a hands-on experience and participants will be working together to complete the dome. Although this will be the central focus and goal of the week, plenty of time will be also be given for theory based learning for a better understanding of Super Adobe, as well as socialising and of course having heaps of fun.

THE PROJECT: Together we will be building an open air garden dome for the Wyong Neighbourhood Centre community garden. This will be a real feature to the garden and a space where workers can stop for a break, a chat, a cup of tea and relax. The exact design will be completed by Hayden Annable with input from the Wyong N.C team and presented to participants during the first workshop meeting.

PSN Ku-ring-gai.   November meeting.   Saturday 15th November  2014.  Lindfield

    Hi everyone.

For our November get-together, we will have an information- sharing  session  with the emphasis on solutions to gardening problems.   Jeremy Yau is coming to talk about growing vegetables and I will do a short presentation on fruit tree troubles and possible solutions.

Now the weather is getting hot, a variety of insects, both good and evil, is afoot, underfoot or on the wing. Knowing the difference between goodies and baddies is not always easy.  If you have information on things that trouble or help gardeners, bring it along. CD, DVD or USB drives can be shown on our TV.

Also, if you have any vegetables-growing questions that you can’t find the answer to let us know beforehand by email and Jeremy will try to find answers.

I hope everyone will have some ideas to contribute or questions to ask on Saturday 15 Non.

And don’t forget to bring some afternoon tea.
