PSN Monthly Meeting - Climate Change & its impacts on the low-lying islands of the Pacific with Vince Sicari

  • 19 Feb 2018
  • 7:00 PM - 9:30 PM
  • Lindfield Community Hall, 259 Pacific Highway, Lindfield

How much is climate change really affecting the low-lying islands of the Pacific?

Vince Sicari has travelled to the island of Kiribati and will share his experiences of seeing the effects of climate change for himself.

His talk will cover:

  • the causes of climate change including the effects of greenhouse gases, its impact on global temperatures and the mechanisms involved in sea level rise, ocean acidification, the generation of cyclones and rainfall patterns
  • specific impacts on Pacific islands and especially the low-lying island states of Tuvalu and Kiribati - including the impacts of sea level rise, coastal erosion, salination of water supplies, effects of cyclones and tidal surges, and effects of ocean acidification on fisheries.
  • the basic concepts of the world response to climate change including the ideas of mitigation, adaptation, “loss and damage” and resilience building.
  • the potential for adaptation, and the ethical and human rights issues associated with climate change.

Free for members, small donation for guests.

Doors open at 6:30pm - a good time to check out our members' library & catch up with other PSN members.

Please join us for supper after the talk.
