NATIVE BEEHIVE MAKING

Saturday 17th April 10am to 12pm

Wildflower Gardens, St.Ives

Join us for an exciting morning and learn how to construct a Native Beehive.

Alex Austin manages the Native Bee Program for Ku-ring-gai Council in which council residents are able to host a native beehive on their properties. In this program, hives are split every year or two, so there is an ongoing need for new hive boxes. The Native Bee program has been running since 2006 and the design of the hive boxes (which are made by the local Men’s Shed) has been changed several times over the years.

In this workshop, Alex will explain what is needed in a native beehive and how and why the design of the Ku-ring-gai hives has been modified since 2006. Alex will also discuss the option of hive duplication via eduction.

After Alex’s talk, Kevin from the Men’s Shed will demonstrate how his team constructs a native beehive box for the council program.

At the end of the workshop, participants will be given plans for constructing native beehives by themselves.
