Join us on Monday night at Lindfield Hall or via Zoom for stories from two of our members, who are involved in upskilling projects: The Repair Cafe Sydney North and The Sydney Library of Things!

Wendy Dwyer has been for years a pillar of The Repair Café Sydney North (Living & Learning Centre, 180 Longueville Road, Lane Cove) She said "It is a part of a global not for profit organization which has its genesis in Amsterdam in 2009. We aim to fulfill the 3 main principles of the global repair Café movement of bringing back repairing, sharing repairing skills and harness social connection over a low-key activity.

Besides fixing the problem, we encourage our visitors to participate in the repair process whenever possible. Engaging them in the process could potentially upskill them to do their own repairs. It also fosters the mindset of bringing possessions back to life rather than throwing them out. And what a great way for community building for the visitors to connect with the volunteer over a low-key repairing activity!"

Carol Skyring is a co-founder of The Sydney Library of Things (TSLoT) which is a library without books! Instead, it contains many useful items that can be borrowed for short periods of time. There are almost 200 items in the library - power tools, camping gear, garden tools, kitchen gadgets, party gear, games & puzzles. Carol says: "We hope that by encouraging people to borrow instead of buying or throwing away their unwanted items, together we can create a better connected, more sustainable and stronger community. Our motto is “Why buy when you can borrow”.

The instigator for the establishment of TSLoT was Bridget Kennedy who co-opted Carol Skyring & Jacky Barker to co-found the library as a not for profit, incorporated association. TSLoT is run entirely by volunteers and is supported by the North Sydney Council who provide space at the Coal Loader Centre for Sustainability at Waverton. We’re in the process of establishing TSLoT at Lane Cove - with the support of the Lane Cove Council."
