What's the UN High Seas Treaty

On 17th January 2026, an important international agreement came into force – the UN High Seas Treaty. But what is this Treaty and what does it mean for Australia and the oceans?

Our speaker this month, Dr Cat Dorey, will highlight what the Treaty covers and explain how it works together with other international laws to protect the marine environment and its resources for future generations. She'll provide the historical context for the Treaty, and explain why it took nearly 20 years to agree! She'll also discuss how we can each play our part to make sure the high seas – areas beyond national waters – are properly protected.

Cat has over 25 years experience in environmental and social justice advocacy and activism, and has been campaigning for healthy oceans since 2003. She worked internationally on fisheries and seafood sustainability for 14 years with Greenpeace, and on marine protected areas and imported seafood traceability for 3 years with the Australian Marine Conservation Society (AMCS). She's currently an Independent Advisor on fisheries management, sustainable and equitable seafood sourcing practices, and fish welfare. Cat is also Chair of the Board of the Sustainable Fisheries Partnership, an international NGO, and is a member of the steering committee for the Make Stewardship Count coalition, which works to improve seafood certification.
